e01 Not So Funny Business - Are You a Professional?

px1

The following short quiz consists of 4 questions and will tell you whether you are qualified to be a "professional."

Scroll down for each answer. The questions are NOT that difficult.

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator put in the giraffe and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Open the refrigerator put in the elephant and close the refrigerator. Wrong Answer!

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory.

OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your true abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it?

Correct Answer: You swim across. All the crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers.

Pivotstor Tape Libraries
Pivotstor AP4000

The PivotStor AP Series tape libraries provide reliable, automated data protection for organisations that require affordable unattended data protection, and have outgrown the capabilities of entry-level tape autoloaders. Offering cost effectiveness not available in most tape autoloaders, you can more easily free up valuable IT resources, further minimize human error, backup more data quickly, and generate offsite archive copies of your critical data to meet your growing data retention requirements, and reinforce your business continuity plan.

PivotStor's 2U, 4U & 8U rack-mount tape libraries are available in LTO3 or LTO4 models with the flexibility of either Fibre Channel (FC), SAS or SCSI/LVD connectivity. Find out more Here

KISS - Addressing the Archive Challenge

Addressing the Archiving Problem: How do you address the archiving problem? Infrastructure is important, but the key to a successful archive solution is an understanding of the real problems you are trying to solve SO KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE SILLY).

1) Asses you current Digital Assets

The diagram on the right depicts a common data structure among Australian SME's. It is interesting to note that File Data consumes greater then 50% of the  total IT Spending on Storage.

    2) Asses the Business Requirements

There has to be a business case for archiving

    There are many benefits to implementing Archiving Strategies, including;

    - Saving costs in Backup and Disaster Recovery Operations (Archiving Reduces the Need to backup certain data)

    - Cost Savings through reduced energy consumption and cooling costs for your infrastructure

    - Reduced costs for data management, by focussing on the most profitable aspects of the Operating Environment

    - Minimise exposure to Litigation and Compliance, through policy based archiving solutions

There is a common theme here; Archiving has a good case if the organisation wants to save money
    Cash

File Growth

3) Maximise your existing investments

Many organisations spend considerable amounts of money acquiring the latest technology to deliver efficient operating environment for users to conduct business processes productively. The problem is in many cases 80% of content residing on these highly efficient (and extremely expensive) storage systems/environments is not being used. Thus causing bottlenecks to the overall efficiency of the Operating Environment,

KISS Principle suggests to move these data assets that still have business value to less expensive, easy to manage and maintain Storage, to free up the high availability of the primary operating environment;

Disk Optical Tape

4) The TCO is the key

The old adage of Storage Management was to throw more disk (Magnetic Disk $$$$) at the problem.

i.e. The mail server is out of space, we need to go out and quickly buy more expensive magnetic disk to grow this volume. The issue with this scenario is by now you’re probably up to your 4th Disk expansion and every time you add more Disks you have to add more people to manage it, more software to manage the growing volumes and more backup hardware/software to ensure nothing happens to the volatile properties of magnetic disk (Three disk failure in RAID 6).

All these add to the bottom line and further stretch the almighty dollar.
