Not So Funny Business

Two neighbours were talking about work, when one said, "Say, why did the foreman fire you?"
The other neighbour replied. "Well, you know how a foreman is always standing around and watching others do the work. My foreman got jealous. People started thinking I was the foreman." |

November inReview
Last month saw lot of our vendors keeping the press busy with new solutions from:
-
NorthSeas – New hardware and software updates
-
Plasmon – New case studies
-
QStar – Three (3) new product additions
-
Qualstar – New Enterprise Tape Libraries
This comes as no surprise as Storage Networking World Exhibition makes its way around the world, and many manufactures have used SNW as a launching pad for any new offerings.
NorthSeas New Hardware and Software revision of the award winning Email Archiving Appliance sees a complete over haul. Now with larger email message indexing and improved search engine results.
UK Ordnance Case Studies - if you ever wanted to know the most efficient way to store, index and retrieve 40TB per year data grow, check out the UK Ordnance case study.

Case Study Video/Whitepaper - Plasmon UK Ordnance Survey
The UK's main map supplier, the Ordnance Survey, is storing its digital map data on Plasmon UDO disks With BridgeHead HT FileStore software. The data has to be kept permanently.
Considering Archiving 40TB pa of RAW digital images Forever find out how they found a solution using Plasmon Ultra Density Optical.
Takeaways from case study include:
1. A SAN is not well-suited for the job of long-term archiving of WORM data.
2. Nor is tape.
3. You need archive software to integrate the archived data with daily operations and transfer data back and forth.
4. One archive is not enough. You need a second for DR purposes.
5. Having a virtual single tier of storage for users makes their life easier.

Nexsan and FalconStor Certify AutoMAID Virtual Tape Solution for the Channel
Nexsan Technologies, the leader in innovative and secure storage solutions, and FalconStor , the leading developer of proven data protection solutions, announced the availability of a certified enterprise-class virtual tape library solution that combines FalconStor's VTL software and Nexsan's extreme-density storage systems.
The high-capacity virtual tape solution can scale up to 315 terabytes in a single rack, providing energy efficient disk-to-disk backup functionality for even the largest volumes of data. Nexsan's AutoMAID(TM) (Massive Array of Idle Disks) energy-saving technology allows the solution to place its disk drives to an idle state to conserve energy yet provide near-instantaneous access to data.
With FalconStor's VirtualTape software product line, and Nexsan's award-winning storage hardware, customers can leverage cost-effective SATA-based disk arrays to provision virtual tape drives and libraries to backup servers attached to an iSCSI/IP or Fibre Channel (FC) storage area network (SAN), without the need to change existing backup software configurations.

QStar Storage Management Software Release HSM Lite
QStar HSM-Lite, an archive management software designed to address the archive and regulatory needs of the small and medium businesses required to meet industry compliance. HSM-Lite is an extremely cost effective archive solution that enables small businesses to manage large pools of data through a seamless tiered storage management structure, supporting disk, tape and optical.
QStar HSM is designed to use high-speed storage devices, such as disk arrays, as a cache and move data automatically to less expensive, slower, removable storage devices, such as optical discs and magnetic tape drives. While it would be ideal to have all data available on high-speed devices all the time, this is prohibitively expensive for many organizations. Instead, HSM manages the enterprise's data on slower devices, and then copies data to faster disk drives when needed.

Technology Corner - Comparing Tape Technology
The explosive growth of computer disk capacity, networks and database applications has
driven an increased demand for data storage products. Tape drives, due to their low cost per gigabyte stored, continue to be the preferred method of backing up and storing data
and protecting against data loss.
This article examines three leading tape
drives technologies: Sony AIT, Ultrium LTO and Quantum DLT. These three
technologies employ distinctly different recording formats and exhibit different
performance characteristics. Therefore, choosing among and investing in one of these
popular technologies calls for a complete understanding of their respective strengths and
weaknesses.
