Not So Funny Business

SOCIALISM: You have 2 cows, and you give one to your neighbour
COMMUNISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and gives you some milk.
FASCISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both and sells you some milk.
BUREAUCRATISM: You have 2 cows. The State takes both, shoots one, milks the other, then throws the milk away.
TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM: You have 2 cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your heard multiplies, and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.
AN AMERICAN CORPORATION: You have 2 cows. You sell one, and force the other to produce the milk of four cows. Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why the cow has dropped dead.
A FRENCH CORPORATION: You have 2 cows. You go on strike, organise a riot, and block the roads, because you want three cows.
AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION: You have 2 cows. Business seems pretty good. You close the office and go for a few beers to celebrate.

2006 inReview and 2007
February 2007 Already ......
A look into the Crystal Ball for the year ahead;
Strong growth in demand for storage capacity by businesses and individuals and a desire to manage that growing capacity more effectively will dominate trends in the storage market in 2007.
The creation and ongoing use of data is expanding at a rate unimaginable by most companies even a few years ago. At the same time, IT organisations face pressure to accommodate this storage growth without significantly increasing capital expenditures or staffing levels.
Is Storage still being commoditised? Consider the recent press articles;
- The Real cost of Storage (Ziff Davis
- How to count the cost of storage (TechTarget)
- Consider Operational Costs When Shopping for Storage (IT BusinessEdge)
Many Businesses are now residing in the fact that purchasing cheap disk is not the answer to age old problem of 'not enough space on disk'.
One of many possibilities; By no means is the following statement to be taken as a joke, but should be taken lightly and with a grain of salt (but not sugar..);
Many organisations need to go on a similar TV Series as ‘The Biggest Looser’. Forgive me if you do not know about this Reality TV show about Wight Loss. Put simply they get a number of ordinary people on a TV show who 'need' to lose weight. They put them through a series of programs to help them reduce there weight (diet's, calories, counts, fitness, etc). The reference to storage is a series of programs to evaluate where they are and what they need to do. By no means am I suggesting every Server Room install a Tread Mill! But a Weight Loss program for Storage (Storage Management Analysis). |

Find out what you currently have in your Data Infrastructure, not in terms of Hardware, actually looking at you data as assets.
The following statement holds true in every industry “80% of the data hosted by most IT organisations has not been accessed in the last 90 days.*” and at least 60% of that data will never actually be accessed in the future. Primary Storage arrays are not only expensive to buy, they are expensive to manage – requiring resource intensive data backups that clog the network and degrade application performance. (*2005 industry study conducted in the US and UK by eMedia)
The key business drivers for this data include, classification, accessibility, transparency, heterogeneous, and give you band for buck. Give data value, identify and reposition your assets to the most appropriate alternate storage device(s). This process reduces the need for expensive tier-1 storage and simplifies online data management by eliminating the need to repeatedly backup unchanging data.
In saying all of this it would not hurt me to loss a few pounds that was gained over the January break. Plus the thought of a tread mill being in a nice cool place like a Server Room does have its advantages....
